Fresh ground moisture barrier laid across a Wellington subfloor

Ground moisture barriers

Seal out the damp rising under your home.

The soil under most Wellington homes is permanently damp, and that moisture rises straight into your floor. A sealed ground barrier stops it at the source, so your home stays drier, warmer and healthier from the ground up.

The problem below

Cold, damp ground makes cold, damp rooms.

Left bare, the ground under a suspended timber floor releases litres of moisture every day. It soaks into joists and insulation, feeds mould and musty smells, and pulls warmth out of the rooms above. A ground moisture barrier is the single most effective fix for a damp subfloor, and it is the foundation every other upgrade sits on.

How it works

01

Free assessment

We get under your home, check moisture levels and the state of the ground, and tell you honestly what is needed.

02

Prepare the ground

We clear debris and level the worst of the ground so the barrier sits flat and seals properly.

03

Lay and seal

Polythene is laid across the soil, lapped and taped, and dressed around piles so damp cannot rise through.

04

Check and hand over

We confirm coverage, tidy up and talk you through what changed under your floor.

Common questions

Ground moisture barriers, answered.

What does a ground moisture barrier actually do?

It stops damp from the bare soil under your house evaporating up into the subfloor. That keeps timber, insulation and the air in your rooms drier, which means a warmer, healthier home and less risk of rot and mould.

How long does it take to install in a Wellington home?

Most standard homes are done in a day. Larger or lower subfloors, or homes with a lot of debris to clear first, can take a little longer. We give you a clear timeframe after the assessment.

Do I need underfloor insulation as well?

A barrier and underfloor insulation work best together: the barrier keeps the space dry, the insulation keeps the heat in. We will tell you what your home actually needs rather than selling you both by default.
